First the Pope, and now Santa Claus?!?

What do we tell the children?

Firewaters in Hackensack, NJ

La Chouffe

I was excited to learn that there was a new beer bar opening in North Jersey. Firewaters is on Route 4 East in Hackensack, NJ. Shelly and I went there last night to check it out. Firewaters boasts 50 taps. Unfortunately there are a shockingly large number of macroswills on those taps. Overall, I was not impressed. I mean, how good can it be when it shares space with a Hooters. Shelly had a Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA that tasted a bit off, almost grapefruity. I ordered a La Chouffe, pictured here. Notice anything wrong with this picture? They served it in a Coors Light glass. To paraphrase the God of Cookery, you score zero.

Fortunately all was not lost as only a few miles away is Andy's Corner Bar. I haven't been there in a few years and forgot how good this bar is. The selection seems a little thinner than I remember but still a lot of good stuff served with care. Last night they had two cask beers on the hand pumps. Victory Pale Ale American Style and Victory Pale Ale British Style. Apparently each was hopped differently with the American version a bit hoppier and the British version a bit maltier. But not that much different. Still, each was delicious.
